Lifestyle Intervention Can Produce Remission Of Type 2 Diabetes
In the Look AHEAD study, 4503 participants were followed to compare the effects of intensive lifestyle-based weight loss interventions vs. diabetes education and support on cardiovascular disease incidence in adults with type 2 diabetes. The authors reported that lifestyle intervention was associated with a greater likelihood of remission of type 2 diabetes.
This study and many like it continue to show that diet and lifestyle counseling are extremely important modalities to help patients with not only diabetes but all kinds of chronic illnesses like hypertension, heart disease and even cancer.
For more information on this topic, I recommend the book Blood Sugar Solution by Dr. Mark Hyman if you have diabetes or prediabetes. Prescription medications will not induce remissions, but your diet and lifestyle can!
At my clinic we offer the First Line Therapy which is exactly what this study advocates: a lifestyle-based weight loss intervention for diabetics and people just seeking to improve their health and shed a few pounds. It includes measurement of muscle mass through electronic equipment, diet plan, exercise plan, meal replacements, supplements, and counseling. Furthermore, we offer cutting edge and novel blood tests for patients at risk for diabetes seeking prevention, and also for those who seek to reverse their diagnosis and get off of meds. This advanced test surprisingly has excellent insurance coverage including HMO and Kaiser patients. Wow!
